Youth and Community Project

NICHS Youth and Community Project focuses on working with young people aged 9-18 years and their community leaders from marginalised communities in the greater Belfast area.  The Project creates an environment where positive relationships and cross-community partnerships can be developed and sustained between the groups who participate.   Accredited training for both young people and community leaders is offered and provides a tangible incentive for all participants, this is achieved through the delivery of the NICHS OCN Cultural Relations Programmes at Levels 1 and 2.  NICHS works closely with the community and young people to raise money to pay for the accredited service.

Participating community leaders are encouraged to be actively involved in all aspects of the programme, from planning and time-tabling to facilitation.  By developing the skills of the leaders who participate in the programme there is a positive growth in capacity and a greater impact in long term contact possibilities.

Each group participates in a single identity programme which is designed to address any fears or hurdles which might hinder the development of a cross-community partnership.  Following the completion of the single identity programmes, cross-community partnerships are established.  We begin with a contact programme designed to build trust and encourage co-operation between the young people from different cultural backgrounds.  The Accredited Training achievements increase confidence levels and enhance employment opportunities for the participating young people, better equipping them to be more active citizens in their communities.

If your community or group of young people are interested in working with NICHS on this programme please contact us to discuss current opportunities available.
